Well its been a long hot smokey summer here on BC’s south coast but we’re plugging away, enjoying lots of good fishing in Vancouver through August and looking forward to the different angling opportunities we’ll have as we move into September. August and September are quite easily our two busiest months for our Vancouver fishing trips, but we do have availability for all trips and can usually make a guided day trip happen with our crew of first class Vancouver fishing guides. Here’s a breakdown of August fishing in Vancouver and what to expect as we move into September.
Vancouver Fly Fishing Report August 2018
We’ve been crazy busy with our Vancouver fly fishing program this August (sorry to all the folks we couldn’t get out!), and for the most part the local Vancouver fly fishing scene has cooperated.
August saw most of our Vancouver fly fishing day trips either focusing on the Cheakamus River, the upper Mamquam River and the Ashlu River. The Squamish River main stem has remained too high for quality angling opportunities and the lower Cheakamus River has been in good shape but we’ve just had some slow days on it, making us explore into the backcountry and some of our lesser fished smaller tributaries. Our other go to river, north of Whistler, called the Birkenhead River, is usually good in August but this year has been a bit of a dud. Hopefully as the annual sockeye run comes in to that system we’ll see better fishing.
Most of our fly fishing trips have been seeing good action on dry flies, hungry rainbow trout have been smashing small dries and the bigger bull trout have been happy to hit the usual swung streamers and smaller fry patterns we like to use. Our beach trips dried up, didn’t do too many of those in August, as beach clarity got a bit cloudy and the smaller rivers offered our clients better fishing anyways.
As we move into September, we’ll start to see local rivers coming into even better shape, specifically the Squamish main system, and we’ll welcome the early season run of coho salmon, hopefully we get an earlier run of fish this year. Salmon Fishing Vancouver August 2018
Busy as always with our saltwater salmon charters and we’ve had some overall very decent and consistent fishing on the local Vancouver salmon fishing scene. There were some slower stretches through July and early August, but things have been on the steady upsweep, especially with the better than expected run of sockeye salmon showing up in local waters.
The sockeye salmon fishing off the mouth of the Fraser River has been best in the mornings, with lots of the recent charters finding their limit of fish. This should continue into September. As we move into September, we usually enjoy a solid chinook (king) salmon fishery off the West Vancouver shoreline. These fish are moving into the Capilano River and stage at the mouth starting in September. You wouldn’t think you can come salmon fishing in Vancouver and catch big fish, but September is the month for it, we often see lots of fish in the 20+ pound range and better when targeting chinook salmon this time of year!

Vancouver Sturgeon Fishing Report August 2018
No rest for the wicked on our Fraser River sturgeon fishing trips, they’ve been crazy with lots and lots of big fish and incredible days of overall fishing, really a good year.
During August we had lots of clients on our Remote Canyon Trips see multiple fish over seven feet, with even a few over eight feet. Pretty cool that this fishery is producing big fish like this, many of them untagged, meaning they’ve probably never been caught before. As we move into September historically the sturgeon fishing only gets better, and weather conditions remain constant. If you’re looking for a unique fishing trip close to Vancouver then these sturgeon trips are hard to beat, lots of action and fun to be had.
September is a busy month for us,, so if you’re looking for some primo sturgeon fishing dates let us know asap, we’ll do our best to get you fitted into the schedule and hanging on to some of these prehistoric beasts! There is also excellent fishing through October, so if those dates work we have a bit more flexibility on our availability then.
