Winter trout fishing near Whistler has been good, with lots of feed in the rivers from the Fall 2017 salmon runs.  Trout have been feeding heavily on salmon eggs and will eat well this Spring on the hatching salmon fry. With the cold snowy Winter, fishing on Whistler lakes will be awesome as the ice comes off in May and right through until mid July.  We’re looking forward to another good year of rainbow Summer trout fishing on the Birkenhead River, that is one of our most favourite Whistler fly fishing spots. If you’re looking for a trip in August or September the Birkenhead River will be prime time big wild rainbows.  Also, if you’re in Whistler during the Fall months, then there is always the Fall salmon fishery we enjoy on the Squamish River. All in all we are expecting another great season with our Whistler fishing program, we look forward to you being a part of it!

Our Vancouver fly fishing trips during the Summer months tend to focus on trout fishing the Cheakams River, the Ashlu River and sometimes even making our way up to the Birkenhead River.  Early Summer can sometimes be tough, with higher river conditions.  If you’re looking for a trip in June or July please contact us for an up to date report on river and water conditions.  Often during that time we’ll recommend you come fish with us at our Whistler location, about a 90 minute drive north of Vancouver. The Cheakamus and Ashlu rivers are both important tributaries of the Squamish River and tend to stay in shape better during the Summer months. These two rivers are accessed by walk-n-wade trips. The wading and walking are easy and the rivers are sized that no long casts are needed. This is a wonderful time for new anglers to experience fly fishing in BC, with opportunities at rainbow, bull and cutthroat trout.

  • Tons of awesome Whistler fishing options all Summer long, great time for a trip!
  • Enjoy guided Summer fishing on alpine lakes and mountain streams for rainbow trout.
  • We fly fish for wild Pacific salmon in October & November, just 30 minutes from Whistler!

Fall months are a hugely exciting time fishing the coastal rivers near Vancouver. This is when our focus shifts to swinging flies for migrating salmon, making their returning to our local rivers. Keep in mind this is another very busy time of year for us and a good idea to look ahead and plan your trip early to avoid disappointment. As we push into October, we begin seeing the return of chum and coho (silver) salmon. This generally begins in early October with the peak of the peak runs happening in the middle of the month.  A few days can make a big difference when waiting for these fish to arrive.  When the chums and cohos are in thick we can enjoy absolutely epic days of fishing, sound corny, but literally til your arms are sore.  You can count on solid Fall salmon fishing right through until mid/late November.

If you’re coming to Whistler for a ski vacation and want to get some fishing in then we definitely have some awesome winter fishing options for you (and no it’s not ice fishing!). Our trips from December to March focus on the rivers south of Whistler, where snow, cold and ice are minimal to none and that offer solid fishing for wild trout and steelhead. Many of our guests this time of year are in Whistler to enjoy the vast amount of skiing we have here, but who are looking for something different to do for a day. Our guides will pick you up and have all the warm gear ready for a day on the river. You’ll fish wild rivers that see very little angler pressure, targeting mainly resident bull trout, a type of char, and there is also the opportunity to fish for steelhead in the winter months. These beautiful fish are sea-run rainbow trout that come into the Squamish River system starting in mid February.

  • On a ski trip to Whistler?  Yup, you can fish too, we have some great Winter options!
  • Swing flies for wild rainbow and bull trout through all the Winter & Spring months.
  • Spring is prime steelhead season on the wild coastal rivers close to Whistler.

Lots of Spring time fishing in the Whistler area. March & April are often our best two months on the Squamish River system south of Whistler. Our full day trips will get you into this wild coastal valley and swinging flies for big bull trout, wild rainbows and sea-run steelhead. This is an excellent time to book a trip, with great fishing and consistent river levels. We offer both walk-n-wade trips as well as raft trips. By early March the warming temperatures tend to make for idilic river conditions as some of the low laying snowpack begins to melt, putting some colour into local rivers and inviting more steelhead to poke their noses in from the saltwater.  As we move into May and and early June our focus shifts to fishing Whistler’s many alpine lakes. River levels tend to rise quickly during this time of year and lake fishing is a much better option. Local lakes are home to rainbow and cutthroat trout. We utilize belly boats and rafts to fish these lakes, some as close as five minutes driving time from Whistler Village. This time of year and style of fishing is fun for anglers of all abilities and usually includes lots of action!
