Vancouver fishing report fall 2017

VANCOUVER FLY FISHING FALL 2017

Pink salmon season is wrapping up now, we had a healthy return of pink salmon on the Squamish River system and river conditions were quite favourable through August and September. As I write this on September 24th, the pink salmon fishing is all but done, although there are still quite a few fish in the Squamish River, they’re not targetable and in spawning mode. There has been some good trout fishing for bull trout and cutthroats, that should carry us through until early October.

In October we welcome the return of chum salmon and coho salmon into the Squamish River. Our October fly fishing trips from Vancouver will put you in the heart of wild country, swinging flies to chrome fish, freshly entering the rivers from their ocean migration. Chum salmon range in size from 6-15 pounds with some bigger ones. The chums we fish for are on the lower Squamish, fishing within a few miles of open ocean, we just fish for moving bright fish. There is also a healthy run of coho salmon that find their way home to the Squamish and Cheakamus rivers. These fish range in size from 5-8 pounds, sometimes we see some bigger ones. Cohos, also known as silver salmon, are known for their aggressive takes and hard fights.

There is also some very good trout fishing throughout October and November. Swinging egg patterns is an effective method to target bull trout, rainbow trout and cutthroat trout in our coastal rivers. These fish generally feed heavily on the remnants of the pink salmon runs and chum runs. If you’re looking for a multi-day trip you can expect a mix of salmon fishing and trout fishing with us.

Remember, our trips include transportation from Vancouver, professional guide services, all wading gear and fly fishing equipment! This is also a great time of year for a multi-day Vancouver fly fishing package, an affordable and fun getaway that will put you into first class fishing with our great guide staff.

VANCOUVER FALL FISHING FOR SALMON 2017

September has been a pretty good month for salmon fishing locally in Vancouver. Overall there has been some tougher fishing province wide for returning chinook salmon, it hasn’t been the hottest year of fishing, but there certainly has been some highlights throughout September.

The majority of our Vancouver salmon fishing charters are taking place off the mouth of the Capilano River, with outflows on the north shore of Vancouver. This is a short run from the boat moorage, about 20 minutes, and will give you the best chance at bigger chinook (king) salmon in the 10-20+ pound class!

Keep in mind our saltwater salmon fishing in Vancouver does start wrapping up in October. As salmon move into local rivers to spawn there are less numbers of targetable fish in the ocean. October is generally a month when we suggest our freshwater fly fishing trips to prospective clients.

BC STURGEON FISHING REPORT FALL 2017

We’ve had another spectacular year of sturgeon fishing on the Fraser River with August and September being to incredibly busy months with lots of great trips and a ton of BIG fish!

As we move into October things will only get better, with less angling pressure on the river. Fall fishing on the Fraser River is a spectacular time to be here, the leaves are changing, the temperatures are generally very pleasant and the big fish start packing on the pounds before winter. Some of the biggest sturgeon of each season are caught from mid September to mid November, so it is a great time to plan a trip.

We have availability throughout the Fall months and can hook you up with either of our two locations. Our Chilliwack sturgeon fishing location is the most accessible from Vancouver, only 90 minutes east of the city. Our Canyon trips depart from Hope BC, about 2 hours from Vancouver and will put you into the most remote big sturgeon water found anywhere in the world! Either are great options, you can have a look at our Vancouver sturgeon fishing trip page here for more info on what we offer. There is open availability through May, so email us or call Greg at the office toll-free 1-877-902-3393 to book a day of sturgeon fishing.
